Do you know how awesome Ayurveda is?
Ayurveda, loosely translated from Sanskrit, means the “science of life.” Developed in India thousands of years ago, Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest holistic, or mind-body-spirit, healing methods. Ayurveda, much like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is based on the premise that a person’s overall health and wellbeing depends on a proactive or preventative approach to maintain a delicate balance of the mind-body-spirit, and not to be reactive and fight disease.
However, treatments may be geared toward specific health problems should they arise as when something disrupts the balance.
Ayuerveda looks three different energies, or doshas, that make up a person’s constitution. They’re called vata, pitta and kapha and are comprised of the 5 elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether. There’s typically a dominant dosha that determines someone’s overall mind & physical body, but elements of all 3 are present in everyone. There are clear indications when someone has too much or too little of one type of dosha present, which throws the system off balance. The imbalance will show up physically, mentally or both.
Anxiety, nervousness, low energy, inflammation, weight gain and digestive issues are some of the ways imbalance shows up both physically and mentally. As such, your digestion is a cornerstone of Ayurveda. Foods prevalent in the practice, much like TCM, are mostly cooked, warm and warming as this helps with complete digestion, absorption and assimilation. The results of eating this particular diet and way results in glowing healthy body and consciousness.
Sounds pretty awesome right?
I made this Roasted Turmeric Cauliflower and Kale salad adapted from @kateodonnell.ayurveda. I used coconut oil instead of ghee, but all other ingredients remain the same.
