Have you ever had Brazil nuts? These South American mighty tree nuts are one of my faves and super high in selenium, iron and healthy fats as well as many other vitamins and minerals like copper, magnesium and zinc.
One Brazil nut contains more than 100% of the recommended daily value of selenium. I am currently eating two a day to balance out a not-totally-dangerously-low level as discovered by my naturopathic doctor. Selenium is important for thyroid hormones, immunity and brain function and are super high in antioxidants, which help the body to detoxify and slow down premature aging.
There are a range of symptoms for Selenium deficiency. The most common are:
muscle weakness, fatigue, mental fog, hair loss, weakened immune system. Much to my parents’ chagrin, I’m not a doctor, so it’s best to get checked by someone who is before hitting WebMD to diagnose yourself. I kid – my parents are perfectly happy with me being me:) Quick, what is the symbol for Selenium on the periodic table of elements?! This is one of the two things I remember from high school chemistry. Leave your answer in the comments below.
