Apple

A is for apple.

I’m assuming you’ve heard the old adage, an apple a day, keeps the doctor away? Nod your head if you have. It’s an old saying that has morphed a little over time. While there is no statistical evidence to support the claim, there are some cool things about this sweet, crunchy little orb.

The apple is not the most nutritionally dense of fruit, however it is high in fiber and low in calories, which is helpful for things like weight loss and heart health. The skin is high in antioxidants, vitamin C and they entire fruit is said to aid those with asthma. This makes sense as in TCM, the apple is said to balance the lungs and cleanse the skin.

They also believe that apples can help cleanse intestines and the liver.

This is a fruit that I urge you to buy organic. Should you not buy organic, it may be best to remove the peel before consuming as it will carry those pesticides into the body. The peel could also be hard for some to digest should they have any GI issues/ailments. They also are part of the BRAT diet as they have a high pectin content and said to alleviate GI discomfort. Steamed apples or applesauce are easy to digest.

To clean the apple, rinsing doesn’t totally cut it. You may want to soak it in a solution of baking soda and water for 12-15 minutes. That will help remove any pesticides/residue and make it safer to eat.
